Arahunga School has two classes for primary school aged learners located in the heart of Carlton School in Whanganui.
In these classes students are exposed to a variety of hands-on activities and learning through real life experiences. Students are able to express themselves creatively through music, movement, art and play. Each week the classes focus on a key theme which is woven through our structured literacy and numeracy programmes. The class environment caters for all students preferred activities and has an area where students can take a sensory break when it is required. Each class also has their own safe outdoor space which is available to students at all times throughout the day.
Our learners in our Carlton Classes are very fortunate to be able to work in small classes sizes of 3-5 students. We operate these classes with a very high staff ratio which is currently one adult to two students. In addition to this high staffing our Carlton learners have at least weekly contact with our highly skilled therapy team which includes: Speech Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Music Therapist and Special Education Adviser.
This high level of specialist support ensures that our learners have Specialist Teachers, Support Staff and Therapists who work together to provide quality specialist learning programmes tailored to meet each learner's individual needs.
Our classes are hosted by Carlton School who welcome and include our learners wherever possible. We use the wonderful playgrounds, heated indoor swimming pool year round, and join in with a range of Carlton School events and activities.
If you would like to find more our about learning at our Carlton hub please contact our Whanganui Regional Manager, Meli Brooks on 027 360 3966 or email mbrooks@welearn.school.nz
We are very lucky to have access to weekly swimming sessions in the Carlton School pool. Our regular swimming sessions are valuable opportunities to practice and integrate a wide range of learning skills personalised for each of our learners.
For some of our learners the freedom of movement and relaxation that the pool environment allows is a critical component of their development.
We are extremely fortunate to be able to access valuable specialised advice and guidance from Lizzy our physiotherapist, who joins us in the pool as often as she can. She ensures that our learners physical goals are integrated into our swimming sessions to maximise each learners development.
Our learners have opportunities to develop their swimming skills as well as supporting health and physical development.
We learn to manage ourselves in and around the pool as well as dressing and undressing and looking after our own belongings.
