The Poumanawa is a Specialist Learning Hub for learners with complex needs within the St Joseph’s Catholic community. This hub operates in partnership with St Joseph’s and Arahunga Specialist School. St Joseph’s hosts the hub and Arahunga School provides the specialist teaching staffing and programmes to meet the individual needs of the learners.
The Poumanawa Hub supports an inclusive hub model where all the learners are fully included in their St Joseph classes. The learners are enrolled at Arahunga School but all strongly identify as St Joseph’s School students. An enrolment in the Poumanawa Hub (operated by Arahunga School) gives the learners the opportunity to fully participate as a St Joseph’s student while having access to a highly skilled and experienced teaching team from Arahunga School. Each learner has a personalised programme specifically designed to meet their individual needs. The Poumanawa Hub operates with a very high staff ratio and this enables the learners to receive support they need whether this is within mainstream classes or specialised targeted teaching in small groups in the hub.
The learners must be part of the St Joseph’s Catholic community and have ORS funding. Families wanting to consider the Poumanawa Learning Hub as an educational option for their children should firstly contact Mary Kleinsman-Powell. Principal at St Joseph’s to discuss details of the enrolment. Mary will then refer the family to the Arahunga Principal to discuss the needs of the learner.
Visits are encouraged to the Learning Hub to ensure that this is the best education option for the learner.
All potential enrolments at Arahunga School need to have a Section 37 pre-approved by the Ministry of Education. Once a Section 37 is approved the enrolment process for a placement at Arahunga can be progressed.
